Flow of Life is a multidisciplinary work shaped by the menstrual cycle and the story of womanhood.

This organically grown body of work started with a seed of pain and led over the course of one lunar year to healing and understanding. The pain invited Marisa to witness and physically feel one of the core wounds of our planet, the suppression and misunderstanding of women and their blood. As she allowed the collective trauma to flow through her, the moon paintings inspired visions of the past and the future.

During the entire making of this work, Pele (the goddess of volcanoes, fire, wind, and dance — also known as the creator of the Hawaiian Islands) was evidently present. The first four paintings were created when Marisa and Michael lived in a lava zone 3 on the Big Island of Hawaii. The turbulence of this particular land and Marisa’s emotional landscape are a direct expression of the paintings. On the day they moved to their new home on the north of the island, Kileaua erupted.

FLOW OF LIFE is a manifestation of 13 moon paintings, an award winning short film, photographya poem & much more which you can discover on this site.

As I was invited to look at the beauty of my blood, I now invite you, to look at yourself. Because to look at your pain is a road to freedom. As I was invited to look at the beauty of my blood, I now invite you, to look at yourself. Because to look at your pain is a road to freedom. As I was invited to look at the beauty of my blood, I now invite you, to look at yourself. Because to look at your pain is a road to freedom.
I experienced the collective trauma of generations flowing through my body, I would fall to the floor and cry out “This is not just my pain, this is the pain of so many women.I experienced the collective trauma of generations flowing through my body, I would fall to the floor and cry out “This is not just my pain, this is the pain of so many women.I experienced the collective trauma of generations flowing through my body, I would fall to the floor and cry out “This is not just my pain, this is the pain of so many women.
Flow of Life streamed as an urgent desire to understand my suffering and to know, it is me who carries pain but also, pain who carries me. Flow of Life is an homage to women who have lived and live their lives in shame and guilt for their bodies and blood.
